During prosperous times, people spend money freely. There is little thought toward value. When the economy is in a slump, people begin to find ways to save a dollar. For example, during the Great Depression, Americans found themselves in extremely tough times. People had to do whatever they could in order to survive. They had to find ways to stretch every penny just to provide the bare essentials.

Survivors of those times recount, sometimes with fondness, how they managed to endure. How rather than replacing clothing when it was worn, it would be mended. When something was worn beyond repair, the bits and pieces would be saved to be used to repair something else. Food scraps would be used to make soups and stews. Nothing was wasted.

While no other recession has ever been as bleak as the one that started in 1929, there have been others. Each time, people have made adjustments in order to endure. During these times, we find ways to be thrifty, while providing what we need. Clipping coupons, and shopping sales. Repairing broken or worn items rather than replacing them.

In this series of articles, we will explore exercise and nutrition options while on a shoestring budget. Uncover resources to achieve fitness for little to no money.

There was a time not that long ago that fancy health clubs were only for the wealthy. People used bare bones basic gyms with not much more than some barbells, dumbbells, weights, and benches. There was what is now considered “old school” methods of training. These did not require much money. We are going to rediscover some of these techniques.

It is a common misconception is that eating food that is good for you is just too expensive. That is only true if you do not know what to look for. We are going to strategize ways to shop, and plan meals in order to feed a family using healthy foods. And all while not breaking the bank.
